2024 Subaru Forester Off Roading

When you explore the story of Subaru, you’ll uncover a tale of innovation, engineering grit, and international expansion spanning decades. If you’ve ever wondered who makes Subaru or whether these vehicles are made in America, here’s an overview!

Who Makes Subaru?

Subaru vehicles are made by the Subaru Corporation, with “Subaru” coming from the Japanese word for “unite.” This company originally debuted as Fuji Heavy Industries in 1946, focusing on aircraft manufacturing. After expanding the business to include automobiles, the first Subaru prototype was created in 1953. By 1968, the Subaru 360 was revealed to the public as a budget-friendly vehicle. In the early 1970s, the auto manufacturer introduced several new vehicles, including the Subaru 4WD Wagon, which was the first four-wheel drive passenger vehicle sold on U.S. soil.

The Subaru Corporation continued to craft high-quality vehicles throughout the 1970s and beyond, solidifying its position as a popular vehicle brand. Innovations include symmetrical all-wheel drive technology and the famous SUBARU BOXER® engine.

Is Subaru Made In America?

Subaru was founded in Japan and remains a Japanese automobile manufacturer. By the 1980s, the company’s manufacturing activities expanded to the United States. This partial move to the U.S. occurred due to the popularity of Subaru vehicles in America. As of 2025, there are three Subaru plants in two countries.

Subaru remains committed to its Dublin customers and the environment. The Subaru Love Promise, for example, is a pledge that Subaru employees and retailers take to treat all customers with love and respect. Subaru also shared its zero-landfill applications with the National Park System to help decrease related litter.
